Our Thanksgiving Weekend

Started off with one child in the ER and one in urgent care. Not so good!
It also showed me how little I know when it comes to the childrens health issues. Also, Moms super powers kicked in and she was literally in two places at once, with me stumbling over each doctors questions until Mom made her way back from the ER or urgent care.
One has phemonia A and B, and one will soon have either one. Yuck!!

Cindi again out did herself in cooking a fantastic turkey dinner with all the trimmings, and I got clean up duty. Three hours after we all were done eating everything was cleaned up and back to somewhat normal.

Yet again Cindi showed that she is the glue that holds this family together, and I'm very thankful that she allows me to stick around!! ;)

Well, I don't how to really start this, so I'll wing it.
It's break time, so its all good! ;)
Cindi is............ First and formost a SURVIVOR!!! Hands down, bar non, this women is very lucky to be alive today!! I'm so very lucky to be with her!!! I can't say that enough!!

Selfless: she'd give you/me/anybody the shirt off her back to help a person out. She'd also give ya the last dollar out of her purse, ah, wallet, nope checkbook, yeah there it is!! ;)
Do not do her wrong by her selfless act, or there'll be hell to pay. This has come back to bite her on numerous occasions, but I love her giving spirit!!!

Super-Mother: I've never seen anyone juggle a family as gracefully as her!! Yes, she does have her moments, but show me someone who doesn't and I'll call bullshit everytime!! When it comes to Cindi's family, selfless x 100 is the norm!! Really, when I think about it, that's not doing this women I'm with justice either!! So, I guess there's nothing she wouldn't do for her family!!

I love the fact that Cindi says to my face "I hate that stupid bike," but then turns around and says "why don't you go for a bike ride??!!" :0 lol
That brings me to her sense of humor, I think the previous sentence says all I need go say about that!! ;)

The only thing I don't like about Cindi?? We never seem to find time for "us time." I totally get we have young kids, and "us time" will roll around in about 10-15 years!!! :0 lol

Wow breaktimes over already??!!

In closing, I love my partner Cindi like there's no tomorrow and would be completely lost without her!!!
So there!!!!

Yup, this couldn't have been more perfect timing.
At out safety meeting this morning we talked about our rail system, and how totally messed up it is, and has been for quite some time now.
I rolled this particular pipe out of the cure oven, and when she got to the middle of the rails, where there's a walkway...... The flanged end bounced off the floor!! Not hard, but yet enough where I knew it was time for me to walk out of my work area to outside.
Where it would finally come to rest would be any-ones guess!!
This pictures shows it wedged itself into the walkway, and resting against the east wall.
It'll be an easy afternoon!! Lol

Geocaching a Summer Day Away in Bemidji, Mn.

it's been awhile since I've been to Bemidji, Mn. double digit years to be exact.
we were looking for something to do this weekend fairly close to home, and Bemidji got the nod.
just another reason why geocaching is an awesome pastime for the family!! lol

our 1st stop was to say hi to Paul and Babe!!

there's supposedly a geocache on this dude, but it was very busy, and we didnt look for long.

next stop was the coolest cache of the day!!

after a couple more finds, it was time for some grub, and then playtime at a very nice local park!!

Wow, it's Memorial weekend already!!?
I spent the 1st 3 days of this week stuck in the hell-hole that's North Shore mining in Silver Bay, Mn. That place is the filthest of all the mines ive been in!!
3 days of 17 plus hours of work, and much much to little sleep!!
I had to spray a tank with 155 Urethane, and trust me when I say it wasn't fun!!
I guess the only thing that was good was i worked with Jim U. and Bill A.
I'd work with those two gentlemen any time any where!!!

So Cindi and I were talking about taking the kids to the "Lost 40" about a two hour drive northwest of Hibbing. I've been there plenty of times in my younger days, but back in those days up at the 40..... I was not in my right mind, if ya know what I mean!! ;) ;)
Can you say the perfect booze cruise???
If you've never been, this area will blow your mind, with trees that 3 grown men can not put their arms around!! It's a cool site in the middle of the sticks!! A plotting mistake, lead this area to not be logged, and that's a cool thing!!
Well, those plans got nixed when the only motel that allows dogs was booked.
On to plan B, grabbing the boat and head to Lake Vermilion!!

Just a Pedal

Thomas left a couple hours ago to spend a couple days with his best friend Jake.
Before he left he wanted to go for a pedal. I asked where he want to go, he says let's just go for a pedal Dad, anywhere is fine.
Our two younger children had gone to the park with their Papa Steven.
So I grabbed my trusty Pug, and Thomas and i headed off.
No biking shorts, no biking gloves, no bike shoes, no GPSr, no biking related items at all.
Just a pedal through the mine dumps.
Easy, slow and silent.
After a few miles the conversation flowed, and it was just plain nice.
I've been trying to think of another word, but nice does the job just fine!!
The conversation will stay between Thomas and myself, which is nice also. ;)
We rode until my phone made funny noises, (i never have my volume turned up, lol), which meant that it was Cindi calling us, Jake and his dad had showed up to pick up Thomas.
So we turned around after around 5-6 miles and headed for home.
I had fun Tom, thank you!!!

Life is Never Fair!!

My son Thomas got some very bad news about his friend Jake yesterday. Jakes time left in this world will be coming to an end much to soon for a 15 year old. Thomas is taking this news very very hard.
I have a very hard time relating to him during this time; I don't know what it's like to lose a friend at that young of an age. The emotions and anger/confusion must be overwhelming.
Much like I can't relate to having my parents divorced. My parents have been together for 50 plus years! I do not know what it's like to go from one parents house to the others on such and such a date. Cindi has more in common with him in these areas than I.
All I can show him is how to be strong when life doesn't seem to deal you a fair hand, and to keep your chin up and force that smile while all the time inside your sad and confussed. Thomas, we LOVE you, and are here for you no matter how ruff things will get!! This is a defining moment for the rest of your life, my son, and know that Cindi and I are here to prop you up during every waking moment!!
You are not alone!!
Also know, that during tough times throughout my life, the pedal bike has helped me through those times, and is a very good mind scubber so to speak. Nothing like a good hard pedal to clear the mind, heart and soul. Throughout my life, if I didn't have my bike, I don't know how I would've been able to get over the speed bumps life throws out from time to time.
Our prayers go out to Jake and his family, and are wishing for the best for everyone involoved!!

Wow post 100!! i was kind of waiting for a special family moment, or some other fun family thing we'd do for #100.
i guess it's just a number anyway.

My 15 year old son Thomas has a friend Jake, going through some medical problems that has him at St. Marys in Duluth, Mn.
today they had to shave Jakes head and cut him open, so Thomas calls me and tells me to get my clippers ready.
Jake gets his head shaved, i'm shaving mine he says!!!

Hog Riders Beware!!!!!

HOG RIDERS BEWARE

Probably the best feature of the house I moved into nearly two years ago is our
neighbors. Allen, and Pat, an attorney and dentist respectively, and
their five lovely and talented daughters, age five through fifteen,
could be the subject of an inspirational series for the Family
Channel.

They are active in religious, political, civic and charitable affairs.
The girls are being very well educated via a home school/internet
format and exhibit prowness in music and other means of artistic
expression. Having the family next door actually gives me a more
favorable outlook on our Country's future.

And, if that weren't enough, Pat's father, Gene, a retired preacher
and bus driver, visits on a regular basis. In a showing of
solidarity, (being a de facto grandfather myself), I refer to him
respectfully as "Grandfather",

He is 86 years old, and a widower for six years. He is still mentally
very sharp, (he's always reading), and gets around pretty well with
the aid of a cane. He spends part of the year, (May - maple syrup
making through November - deer hunting season), at his farm about
sixty miles west of here, and divides the winter months with 2-6 week
stays between Pat and her two brothers' families. I make a point to
visit with him often when he's here.

Grandfather is nearly the same age as my dad would have been. My dad,
who passed away a few years ago, never talked much about the past, and
I was too young to avail myself of adult discussions with my own
grandfathers, so I enjoy the chance to talk about subjects like the
Great Depression, WWII, and the 50's with Grandfather. Having been a
preacher, he's a pretty good conversationalist on nearly any subject,
serious or whimsical.

One day, having been the wearer of a rather lavish Fu Manchu style
mouistache for most of the past 40 years, I asked Grandfather if he
had ever sported facial hair. He said he had grow a beard once, after
he left military service, but his bride-to-be was not favorably
disposed towards it, so that was the end of that. But he said that
when he was a boy, his own father had worn a beard, and then he told
me this story.

Grandfather was the youngest of nine children growing up on a farm on
the Minnesota-Iowa border during the 1930's. Many of his memories are
of hard times and hardships, but there had also been fun times and
important life-lessons to be learned.

He recalls his two oldest brothers as having often been in trouble
with their father. There wasn't any organized recreation to be had on
the remote farm, so the boys had to create fun for themselves.

The mischevious brothers' exploits included riding the farm's hogs,
racing or acting out scenes from matinee western movies they had seen
in town. Their father would be furious when he caught them at this,
since a hog's job on a farm is to lay around growing big and fat for
butchering, not getting lean and tough serving as a steed for make
believe cowboys.

One day, when their father had gone into town, which was an all-day
affair by horse and wagon, Grandfather's brothers took advantage of
the situation by
abandoning their chores to stage impromptu jousting marches astride
the hapless hogs. Suddenly the erstwhile knights of old spotted their
father's rig coming up the road unusually early, but the person driving
didn't look like their father.

Instinctively, they headed down the road aboard their porcine "ponies"
to meet the wagon only to realize, too late, that the man in the
wagon was indeed their father; clean shaven, and seething mad!

I had to compliment Grandfather on the great story. I told him it
reminded me of old Lone Ranger tv show. When the Lone Ranger wanted
to go into town in disguise, he did so simply by removing his
trademark mask. I always thought that was a great trick!

With these thoughts in mind, I decided to act upon a notion I'd been
toying with for the past few months. Realizing that I only had until
sun tanning weather to avoid creating unsightly pale patches, I shaved
off my trademark moustache!

Now hog riders and other miscreants had best beware!

we had enough of sitting in the house, Cindi says lets head out and grab some caches this afternoon.
so we loaded up and braved the 20 mph nw winds and went 3 for 3.

there's still 3 1/2 to 4' of snow on the ground, so we picked winter friendly caches.
this was the best cache of the day by far!!!

15 Years Ago...... Today

My partner/soulmate/Mom/friend, had a massive stroke. Even though she still bares the aftermath of that fateful day; through dogged determination, and pure stubbornness she is still around and doing very very well!! ;)
She has limited use of the left side of her body, but she does more during the course of a day than most people with two properly working limbs!! Even though we don't see eye to eye on occasion, I still love you with all that I am, and here's hoping you make it another 15 years plus!!!

This morning I went to enroll my dogs for welfare. At first the lady at the Welfare office said, "Are you crazy, dogs are not eligible to draw welfare.”

I explained to her that I didn't understand why they should be excluded from consideration. I told her that my dogs are mixed in color, unemployed, lazy, can't speak English, and haveno clue as to who their Daddy's are.

All of them expect me to feed them, provide them with housing, medical care.
So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify.

My dogs get their first checks next Friday. Is this is a great country or what?

You Say It's Cold Outside??

And yes, I pedaled my bike to work this a.m.
Crazy you say?!
Let's put it to you this way.........
Yesterday after work -20 something, with a stiff NNW wind = -30 to -40.
I was colder yesterday than I was this morning riding in -35 to -40 without wind. When I arrived at work I was actually sweating!!

When I was on my way to bed last night, Cindi said she was thinking about keeping the kids home from school today.
Kids, the elderly, and pets are most at risk in these temps, and don't forget the stupid people who don't dress for the weather. ;)

It was -3 (-20ish with the wind), when Cindi and woke this morning.
i let the dog out, started coffee, and shoveled some more snow.
i made breakfast in shifts, since we let the kids sleep as long as they liked.

we planned to take the kids to see the Bentelyville tour of light at Bay Front Park in Duluth, late afternoon. yeah, i thought the roads would still be less than perfect.... i was right, but we still headed out. an hour trip took an extra 34-40 min. but we made it.
it was cold but still a good time, plus they had an awesome fireworks display at 6:00 p.m.
then we made a beeline to Old Chicago for some good grub, then made our way slowly home. ;)

i've been working a lot, and people have been sick, and that's been about all that's been going on in our life.

last weekend the boys and i went to Aurora, Mn. for a geocaching event called a flash mob. only 5 people showed up, but it was still a good time.

this past Thursday Hibbing had a Spirit of Unity parade, yeah a parade during the winter!!??
i pedaled down ater work, with the intention of watching our children, who were walking with their school.
well on my way downtown i ran into my buddy Mike, and he was pedaling his bike with a local radio station...... long story short......i found out i was riding in the parade also!!!

How much I disliked my old job at Irathane Systems!!!
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to be working, but if I was single; I would've taken the unenjoyment and been a much happier person right about now!!!
At Iracore Int. I was up and at em at 4 a.m. no questions asked. It's starting my 2nd full week here, and I can't make myself get up any earlier than 6 a.m.
The thought of coming to this place turns my stomach like you have no idea!!!
The only thing that gets me out of bed are the 4 people that depend on me!!
Cindi, Thomas, Zack and Jenna, I Love You Guys!!! Thanks for keeping me going!!
I'd also like to say, bare with me through this time!!! :))

Time to Play the Game, Again!!!!???

Well, it's that time again. What's that you say Joe?
Work has slowed down to almost a stand still, a lot of us were told yesterday that today is our last day, (15 or so), and we will be laid off. All our big jobs are done for the year, but the 1st half of next year will be rocking again.
So the game i'm talking about is jumping to the other one of two shops within the company. Where i used to work (Industrial Rubber Products), is slower than we are at Iracore. So as of Monday I'll be work for Irathane Systems, right across the parking lot from where I sit right now. They say Jan. for our orders to start rolling in again, but I've played this game for so many years, it'll be Feb. for sure.
We deal with companies that operate the oilsands of Canada. Pipe and pipe only, from 50' lengths down to 17.5' lengths. Company info in the links to the right.
I will be taking a $3 an hour pay cut, but my insurance stay intact!!! With small children, that's worth the cut in pay!!
This is nothing new to me, but unnerving all the same.
I'd like to thank my father for instilling a good work ethic in me at an early age, thanks Dad, I love you!! I know it wasn't easy, and I totally understand why you were such a hardass at times!!! ;) you giving the hardass treatment makes me a hard employee to get rid of, thanks again!!
Also, I'd be amiss not to say, Cindi, I love you more than you know dear!! You truly are the glue that hold our family together!!
So, here's to "playing the game" for 3 months!! Yippee
Also, this means some long hours to make up for the paycut, less family time,less time on the bike.
All in all, I'm just thankful to still be working!!!

A Day in the Life of Our 4 Year Old

I got the chance to spend the day with Jenna at her head start class yesterday. Let me tell ya, it was pretty cool!!!
It was so fulfilling to watch our little girl become a little person outside the home!!
I'm completely jealous of Cindi when she can go and do this day after day!! Watching Jenna interact with the other kids, and how she deals with problems that arise with children that age just blew me away!! Watching her do the things the teachers asked, while other kids are running around being disruptive, was also mind blowing!!! She's older than her years tell!!!
I love you Jenna, and am so very proud of you!!! :)

I also can't believe how other parents can send their children to school looking like they haven't taken a bath in a couple days, and with that mornings meal all over their clothes and little faces!!!
Cindi you are the best mother and partner a child and this guy could ever hope to have!!
I LOVE you!!!

A Cache, and A Bash

We went geocaching towards Tower, Mn. yesterday.

this was the 2nd to last cache out of a total of 8, on an ok day to be outside.

Northern Mn. lost a great man this week, and he was a geocacher.

We ran into "Ole" a couple of different times out searching for caches, and he was always the funny guy with the great big smiles at geocaching events. Our kids called him Papa Dale #2, because he so closely resembled their grandfather. Nice memories to have!!

This morning we received news that our dear caching friend Russ Crawford (better known as ‘Ole’ of Ole and Lena) has passed away from a heart attack. Ole had a well-known name among northern Minnesota geocachers, second only to Bigfoot. The network of people he touched was vast. The contact list in his phone was full of seemingly anyone you wanted to get ahold of.

Russ also had a voracious appetite as a FTF fanatic, being the first to find a cache was a source of joy and accomplishment to Russ. The tougher the better. Russ enjoyed both telling and hearing a good story from the trail. He was an Air Force Veteran, who retired in Northern Minnesota to enjoy the outdoors and regular trips to the Boundry Waters Canoe Area (BWCA).

He will be sadly missed by his wife Donna, his family, and the countless people Russ touched with his wit and humor.

An Afternoon of Geocaching............................

Cindi still wasn't feeling well, i felt somewhat better, but the kids really needed to get out of the house!!!
so we loaded up and headed south to hwy 200, and geocached our way west over to Hill City, and then made a big loop through Grand Rapids, and then back to home. 7 for 7 this fine early fall afternoon!!! sweet!!

School has Started

as i type this Cindi is passed out on the couch, not dealing well with this bug.
i started to feel not so good last night, and i awoke at 4 a.m. with a head full of snot and that oh shit I'm not gonna be able to function at work feeling, DAMN IT anyway!!! so at 4:30 a.m. i made the call into work that i won't be in today.
how is it that the kids aren't sick, but the adults are??
our Jenna starts her 2nd year of head start on Monday, and she is really looking forward to it!!!

Cindi and i had a choice to make as far as Jenna goes.
during the last week of head start last year they did testing of all the kids in J's head start class, and Jenna tested out at a 6th grade level!!! she is the youngest child in her class, and all i can say about that is WOW!!!!
so they told us we should move her on to 1st grade.
well, Cindi and i talked, and we said NO, she'll stay were she is.
if in the future she gets bored or things are coming to easy for her, we'll move her up a grade.
oh well here's to another school year!!

We left for a family function in Hinckely, Mn. Saturday afternoon. we stopped in Floodwood to pick up a geocache, and then made our way to Hinckely.

As i sit down to post this, I'm hammering down a nice steak off the grill, and a couple Summit ESB's!!! damn good if i do say so myself.
anyway, i bolted from work at 11!!!!! what?? my work was done, so "F" it!!!
i get home, pack up the kids and head out to do some geocaching, with the highlight of our 6 caches being Bird Lake (GCG3NX). what fun!!!!
we had about a .35 of a mile hike, and we found the cache in the 1st place we looked.
this cache has been out in the wild since 2003, and the poor coffee can hasn't held up well over time. so today the kids and i replaced the old beat up coffee can with a brand new ammo can!!!
anyway, it was a great day!!

Our kids have had VBS all this week, and it's been the hottest week of the summer here in northern Mn. low 90's 85%-90% humidity. YUCK
i do not know about anyone else, but i'm gonna love the cool fall temps very much!!
Cindi got the sprinkler out for the kids, and then she found the pool still in the box in the garage!!! score one for mom!! the kids were very happy!!
I'm still working 10's Monday-Fri., and it looks like it may last through to the new year. it could be worse, i could be laid-off................shh....bad word!!

We had two days without kids this past Friday and Saturday. wow it's really been awhile since Cindi and I've been without kids for the whole weekend.

as we were checking out of the hotel sat. morning Cindi looks at me and says "it feels like we are forgetting something", i say yeah the kids aren't here. LOL
we've been without kids before, but i can't tell ya when the last time we had a weekend to ourselves!!
Friday we left town around 5:30, and made it to Hinckely at 7:45, where we meet Cindi's cousins who were also taking in the concert.
i gotta say Mr. Thomas put on one hell of a show!! enough said. oh wait....... i do have one complaint............ they had shit for beer there!!! i drank two bud lights, and i thought i was gonna puke!! nothing like going from a nice flavorful Summit beer, then having to drink pretty much non tasteful bud products!! yuck!!!
Mountain Dew tasted better than those bud lights!!!

We didn't do much this weekend.
the kids enjoyed the parade, and all that goes along with it. i guess our life revoles around them, and that's OK!!! as long as Cindi and the kids are happy my life seems to go smoothly, for the most part!!??!!
anyway very few miles were put on the bikes this weekend, and a grand total of two geocaches were found.
i did get the lawn mowed this evening, and that makes Cindi very happy!! ;))

Was FREAKING awesome!!!
My 1st time seeing him, and damn the old man puts on one hell of a show!!!
damn near two hours of steady rock and roll!!!
Great company with Cindi and her cousins Heather and Sara.
i had fun girls!!!
i was hoping for much better concert photo's, but my camera takes video, so security said i could not bring it in, boy was i bummed!!!

Tomorrow Cindi and i will be heading to St. Paul to take in the Tom Petty concert at the Xcel Energy Center.
this will be Cindi's 13th time seeing Tom Petty, and my 1st.
she likes Petty, like i like The Tragically Hip!!!
I've seen the Hip 13 times also, it would've been 14, but they cancelled their last show in St. Paul last fall due to illness.
yes, I'm still kind of belly aching about it, but oh well.
anyway a good drive, and doing some geocaching along the way will be a great thing!!
with two young kids, we don't get to do to much by ourselves.
Thank you Nana Barbie, and Papa Steven, you guys are the best!!!

Land of The Loon

First was the parade at 9 a.m.
you gotta love a parade, and Cindi and i can eat all the good candy the kids get!!! LOL
after the parade we headed over to the local park to take in the hand-made wares, and food!! did i say FOOD? yum yum yum!!!!
ft. long wild rice sausage, porketta sandwhich, kettle corn, shaved ice, along with plenty more. damn i gotta work more overtime!!LOL
in the a.m. we are heading to Ely, Mn. for the day; we're gonna do some geocaching, and biking. should be fun!!
